Public Speaking Workshop Tips - How Prepare For a Big Speech

Do you have the task to make a major speech about an issue important to you or your company? What will you do now so that you will be effective in conveying this information? Here is a step-by-step process to follow.

1. Research your topic.
Dig deep into your topic so that you can learn the latest ideas and discussions. Seek out a variety of opinions and ideas.

2. Choose the most important point.
The most memorable speeches have one crystal-clear point. Reduce the essence of your presentation down to one very succinct idea. If you cannot do this, your audience will not be able to recall your purpose either.

3. Choose stories to illustrate your point.
Stories carry meaning. Choose stories from your own work as well as world fables, myths and legends. These stories can help your audience to hook on to your topic via the recall of these stories.

4. Outline your speech.
Break your presentation into the major components. Build for yourself an outline of the presentation.

5. Ask for writing help.
Consider asking others to help you construct the speech. If there is another speaker or coach whose work you respect, ask them if they will assist you. If your presentation is of a critical nature, it might even be worth paying someone to assist you.

6. Get some feedback.
As you prepare your speech, ask for frequent feedback from trusted friends or advisors. Share with them your draft versions of the talk. Tell them you would like honest feedback.

7. Completely rehearse the presentation with any technology you have chosen.
If your presentation must include slides or other technology, be sure you have rehearsed your presentation with the very same technology that you will be using. For example, use your own laptop computer and remote control to run your slideshow as you practice. Try to use this same equipment at your actual presentation as well.

8. Be well rested.
You need to be mentally aware and alert when presenting the big speech. Be sure to rest the night before your talk. Refrain from consuming alcohol or other mood-altering drugs the night before and the day of your presentation. Don't overeat before you speak.

9. Arrive early.
Give yourself time to see the venue where you will be speaking. Locate any equipment you will need. Get a bottle or glass of water to have with you as you speak. Sit down and relax before speaking.

10. Be peaceful and focused.
When it is your time to speak, be confident that your preparation has been enough. Let little mistakes slide past you as your audience will most likely not notice them. Use good eye contact. Ask people to hold questions until after you have finished your presentation. Keep your main point in mind and visualize the audience leaving with brand new information.

These ten tips will help you communicate any important idea to an audience. Use these same techniques no matter the group size. Focused preparation always has a pay-off in both your confidence and audience satisfaction.
