Public Speaking Workshop: RISE To The Public Speaking Occasion

A good way of remembering proper speaking structure is to use the mnemonic RISE.

R Resist time pressure and Rise with confidence. Don't rush and do take your time. Either walk to the lectern, or take the microphone where you are standing and face the audience. Make eye contact with the audience and with the asker of the question. Do not direct your entire answer just to the questioner.

You can buy a little time by pausing and by restating the question before you begin your answer. Or if you are unsure you can even paraphrase the question and ask it back to the questioner just to make sure you have understood the question. If you do not understand the question ask for it to be repeated.

There are also filler statements such as "that is a great question" or "I am sure that this applies to all of us". Use these sparingly, but confidently as you buy a little time. Smile. Smiling has been proven to release endorphins, which in turn can produce a sense of wellness and confidence.

I Identify your logic. Identify 2 or 3 points that you can use to respond to the question or identify your point of view or opinion in relation to the question. Identify what thoughts come into your mind and how can they be arranged in a logical sequence. Are you going to just be giving information, will you be inspiring the audience or will you be stating your opinion? There are a series of models or tools that you can use to structure impromptu speeches or to answer questions that come unexpectedly.

S Structure your response as a normal speech. Structure your impromptu presentation or your response the same as you would structure a prepared speech. Think of your answer or off the cuff remarks as a mini speech. Start with a strong opening that states your position or point of view, have a body with 2 or 3 points, and then end strongly with a conclusion. In terms of a prepared speech the general structure is;

Tell us what you are going to tell us (Opening) Tell us (Body) Tell us what you told us (Conclusion)

E Ending powerfully with a strong and clear message is crucial if you want to be effective with your off the cuff speeches or answers to questions. To not end strongly with a take home message, call to action or clear summation, can reduce your response to just random ideas or thoughts. Ensure that your concluding remarks link back to you main message and echo what you are trying to say.

When concluding or summing up, it is important not to add any new material or bring in additional points. When speaking off the cuff, this is one of the most common mistakes that people do. As they are concluding they think of something new that they did not mention during the Introduction and body of the presentation, so they throw it into the conclusion, confusing the audience and diluting your conclusion.

Use the RISE model next time you are unexpectedly asked to comment or speak off the cuff. It will buy you the time you need, ensure you have a logical and structures response and it will ensure that the listener knows why and what you opinion or point of view is.
