Public Speaking Workshop: Learn Public Speaking Right Now!

Why do you have to learn public speaking? Well, public speaking is a very valuable skill and can really open doors in your career. Perhaps your reason for wanting to overcome your fear of public speaking is related to your work. For most people it is. The vast majority of careers involve some level of public speaking, from participating in meetings to giving presentations to clients. Folks don't like to do it, but it's a necessary evil in the business world. Let's look closer.

Glossophobia or public speaking speech anxiety is the fear of speaking in public. Many people have this fear, while others may also have fear of crowds or social anxiety disorder. Symptoms include intense anxiety prior to, or simply at the thought of having to verbally communicate with any group. They avoid events which the focus the group's attention is on the individual. Physical distress, nausea, or feelings of panic may occur in such public speaking circumstances. Whether you call it stage fright or performance anxiety, this common fear is the speaker’s equivalent to writer's block.

When I first started to learn public speaking, I thought my purpose was to get everyone in the audience to approve of me. It's not. Be yourself. Most great speakers have a natural ability to display the skills and effectiveness that can help to engage and move an audience for whatever purpose. This is a skill that can be learned with practice. Other skills such as humility and humor can go a long way to making your talks more enjoyable and entertaining for your audience. If you get nervous when you stand up to talk in front of a large group, or if you suddenly feel nervous during the middle of your talk, don't hide this fact from your audience. Sometimes it's better to say out loud that you're nervous. Your group will relate and understand.

If you want to learn public speaking, try these tips!

Know your stuff. Try to pick a topic you know or are interested in. Use humor, personal stories and conversational language. That way you won't forget what to say.

Practice makes perfect. Rehearse out loud and revise as necessary. Practice, pause and breathe. Time your performance and prepare for the unexpected.

Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It's easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.

Arrive early and get familiar with the speaking area. If you know your turf, you will be more comfortable.

Take a deep breath. Begin by addressing your group. It buys you time and calms your nerves. Pause, smile and count to three before saying the first word.

People want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, informative and entertaining. They're on your side.

Remember, don't apologize for being nervous. The audience won't notice it.

Experience is key. Learn public speaking and master it. Become a pro. Just like anything, the more you do it, the better you get!
