Public Speaking Workshop: Is Public Speaking Really That Scary?
You have been asked to deliver a speech to a group of people. It really does that matter if these people are known to you either friends or co-workers what does matter is whether you know the subject matter that you will be speaking on. As you make your way to the podium you experience either a rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, and a dry mouth. However, you may simply be excited about the opportunity to deliver the speech that you have spent hours preparing.
The question that is asked here is, "Is Public Speaking Really Scary?", and the answer is yes and no. I will explain each answer and allow you the opportunity to decide. Before we move to the answers to this question one must look at the importance of public speaking. Whether you are a group leader at your place of employment, someone who is interested in forming a community outreach program or an aspiring candidate for local, state, or national office being able to speak in a public venue is vitally important.
Public speaking can be informative, humorous, spell binding, or simply important. This is one area that few are comfortable being in and even less are good at. The items that need to be present are the speaker must be well informed, educated to a level that speaking on the material is natural, and should have a voice that is strong enough to be heard. If any of these items are missing then the ordeal will be more than scary.
The reasons that lead to an affirmative answer to our questions are as many as you might believe. First if you do not know enough about the subject matter you are asked to speak then by all means you will fail. Secondly if you are not given enough time to research the subject and prepare a public speaking speech then again you will fail. Thirdly, if you have never taken a class, whether in high school or college, on public speaking then you really have no idea as to how to go about delivering a public speaking speech then you will most certainly fail. And let's be honest here, fear of failure is very scary to the point of crippling.
To be able to answer our question in the negative then the exact opposite of the affirmative must be true. So, if you know about the subject matter, meaning you have knowledge on this subject then you have a better than normal chance to succeed. At the same time, if you have been given enough time to complete good research on the subject and write a good speech then again you are being set up to be successful. And if by chance that in your educational times you have taken a public speaking class then you will have an understanding of just how to go about delivering your public speaking speech.
Public speaking plays a vital role in all of our lives. From watching the national news, to listening to any public officer or candidate, to having someone stand up and explain exactly what your company wants and expects from you on a particular project, the things that you will hear are normally important to you.
Having the ability, learned or natural, to stand up in front of any size group and deliver a speech is not only a positive thing for the audience but also for you. If you have this ability you will become more important to your employer and possible earn a better income than if you do not have this ability. While the simple thought of having to deliver a speech can be overwhelming if you have put in the time to learn this ability, if you put in the time to do the research on the subject, and if you take the time to learn to relax in this type of situation, then this will not be scary.
Still not convinced, no problem, stop and think back to the last time you heard a professional athlete give an interview. If this person did not have command of the language, if all that was spoken was slang and cliché, then you probably tuned them out and even thought of them as being dumb. However, if this person spoke in a way that showed a command of the language, if they answered the questions begin asked from a point of view of having been there, and if there was very little or no use of slang words and cliché then you probably stayed tuned in and thought that this person knew and understood what was being said.
As you should be able to see from the last example, being able to speak publicly about almost any topic, from a point of view of knowledge and comfort, the act of public speaking is anything but scary. So, if you find yourself in a situation that requires you to speak in public follow these ideas and you will be successful. Take a deep breath and relax, you will do just fine.
