Public Speaking Training: The History of Public Speaking

The history of public speaking can be as old as the human race. Centuries ago it was noted by historical books that the development of the human race largely depended on their ability to communicate and to convey some messages. These messages or information, in many cases, were carried mouth to mouth from generation to generation. Therefore, it can be understood that speaking has been a passion of human kind through the ages. In fact, realizing that speaking publicly was very important, ancient Egypt even wrote a public speaking manual thousand years ago. Similarly, people in India, Africa and China engaged in public speaking, although the forms might be different nation to nation.

However, the history of public speaking is not complete without noting Demosthenes who lived in Athens 351 B.C. In spite of his speaking disorder, he wanted to be a notorious speaker or orator of that time. In addition, he was famous for his method of using pebbles to practice his speaking. He used to put Grecian pebbles in his mouth while reciting speeches or verses. After some weeks of practice he began to sound normal. Later, oratory became one of the seven major studies of liberal arts. Realizing the importance of public speaking , experts say that there is no better way to acquire the skill of public speaking than to just do it.

On the other hand, the history of public speaking might be a part of the United States history. History has recorded that the Unites States has many notorious speakers such as Abraham Lincoln with his Gettysburg Address or Martin Luther's I Have a Dream. However, you might also note that Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan were remarkable at public speaking throughout their lives. Therefore, it is understood that history is shaped by those who have vision and know how to convey their vision through public speaking.
