Public Speaking Skills Training: The Easiest Way to Improve Your Public Speaking Skills

Do you find yourself wondering how you can quickly improve your public speaking skills? Some people just seem to naturally deliver effective, interesting presentations. The rest of us may not have the time or resources to take a long course with a lot of practice and video sessions where we can learn how to improve our skills. Instead of taking a long course, find someone who seems to be a 'natural' at public speaking, someone with a presentation style that you admire and use them as a model. Modeling is the easiest way to improve your public speaking skills.

What is modeling? Modeling is simply finding someone with the skills that you would like to acquire. Then, map out how they perform a specific action that you would like to emulate and go through the process exactly as they do. People are born with many different talents. Having a talent for, say, telling interesting stories can be very helpful when presenting. But, public speaking is a skill. As it is a skill it is something that can be learned and developed. By finding someone with these skills, you can map out how they use these skills and behaviors. Then, you can apply the same techniques and behaviors to get your desired result. That is modeling.

An example of modeling would be learning how to tell a joke. First you would listen to a person who tells a funny joke. In your mind you can then map out the words they used, the voice inflection, the timing, any gestures, etc. Then, when you tell the joke, you can copy exactly what you saw and heard them do. Using them as a model, you can learn to tell a funny joke.

When I began public speaking I used to regularly watch other public speakers to see what they were doing that was successful. I looked at their body language, how they used their voice, their presentation timing and all of the other aspects of public speaking. Some of the presenters used techniques that I felt comfortable modeling. With each new presentation, I could model a new technique and see how it worked. In this way, I quickly learned new skills and found a style that felt comfortable for me.

Well, that sounds great, but where does a person find a good speaker to model? There are many different resources that you can use to find a public speaking model and many of them are little to no cost. Colleagues. Do you have a colleague that delivers effective presentations? Sit in on their next presentation, take notes, ask questions afterward about how they delivered their speech and model their techniques.

Television. Perhaps you have a favorite TV presenter that you can use as a model? Be careful to find someone who has a style that is applicable for your next presentation. You may not want to model Robin Williams at your next sales presentation. Internet. The internet has a wealth of resources for finding public speaking models. You will find many inspiring presenters and speeches that you can use as models.

Toastmasters. Toastmasters is an organization dedicated to helping people improve their public speaking skills. When you join your local Toastmasters club you will get the chance to watch other presenters and practice delivering speeches as well.

Online courses. If you would like to learn new skills and find a model that you can emulate, but you don't have a lot of time to invest try taking an online course. There are various on-line courses with excellent instructors that will provide the model for how they have become effective public speakers. You can learn at your own pace and with step-by-step instruction, find which techniques are best for you. This is the easiest way to model as someone is providing the model and the map for you.

Whatever method you choose to find a model and map their techniques, the key is to get out there and start applying what you have learned. You can get the results you desire if you take action. I challenge you to go out and find a model that you can learn from today. Then apply what you have learned in your next presentation and enjoy the results.
