Public Speaking Skills Training: Public Speaking Workshops - How to Improve Your Public Speaking Ability
It doesn't matter what skill we are learning, there is always room for improvement. Public speaking is no exception.
But how can you improve public speaking?
Practice should be right at the top of your list of what you should do. Most people need a great deal of practice before they are ready to speak fluently in public. And once they are able to speak in public, each speech also needs to be practiced.
Apart from practicing how to speak, you should also practice how to stand and how to breathe. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and make sure your feet are firmly on the ground. Your shoulders should be braced but not stiff. Make sure that your chin is level and your eyes are looking forward. Relax. Take a deep breath that fills your entire chest. Breathe out. Breathe in again. And out.
A lot of people find that they can improve their public speaking by practicing talking at themselves in the mirror. If this works for you then do it. Try not to sway backwards and forwards when you speak, and avoid too many exaggerated and distracting gestures.
Practice breathing and consciously avoid fill-in words like "um" and "er." There is nothing wrong with pausing for a moment, but keep it silent.
Also work on audibility and modulation. Change pitch and pace while you speak, it will help you sound more interesting. Learn to speak with conviction. If you are half-hearted in the way you present your talk, your audience is unlikely to be inspired. This does not mean you have to thump the table to add force to your speech. If you believe what you say, your voice and mannerisms should show it.
Apart from practicing, there are many other aspects that also need to be considered when you endeavor to improve the way you speak before an audience, starting with the way you structure a speech.
Choosing the right thing to say, the right way to say it (including choosing the right words), and knowing the correct pronunciation of words, are all aspects that can determine the success or failure of a speech. You can also improve your speeches with more interesting and topical facts, and by including personal stories. Read about what you plan to talk about to increase your knowledge and to improve your vocabulary. But also remember that you should always stick to simpler words, rather than complex words which are:
a) difficult to pronounce, and
b) difficult for some people to understand.
Reading not only increases our vocabulary, it also increases our knowledge, our stock of ideas and it can provide us with interesting quotations, references and stories to retell.
You can also improve the structure and presentation of speeches by reading well structured books. But remember that the written word and the spoken word do differ. When speaking, a good rule to follow is 'one sentence, one idea' because apart from anything else, an audience cannot go back and reread what you have said!
There are different ways that we can all improve the way we compose and present speeches, and you will need to decide which aspects you need to improve on most. Remember that you need to deal with your own failings to succeed.
