Public Speaking Skills Training: Public Speaking Training - 10 Top Tips to Make You Shine
The audience is expecting a fine display of confident public speaking. You're physically and mentally fit, you know what you're talking about, and yet as soon as you stand up, you start to shake, your eyes refuse to focus and your lips start to tremble. You clench and unclench your sweaty palms, and it feels as if all the blood in your body has rushed to your head and is buffeting your brain. Instead of enjoying your speech, the audience is left feeling anxious and disappointed.
If that sounds all too familiar, help is at hand. You can master the skills of confident public speaking and these tips have been designed to help you do just that.
1. View your audience as your friends. As you speak, make eye contact with a few people in the audience.
2. Do some deep breathing before you start to speak, this will relax you both physically and mentally.
3. Unless you are asked to make an impromptu speech, prepare your speech and rehearse it mentally several times beforehand. Preparation overcomes fear and is a vital part of confident public speaking. Without preparation, what you meant to say may not be what you actually say. Being tentative never brought anyone success. Public speaking is just like any other task for which you need to prepare and plan.
4. Try to gauge the mood of the audience. Tell what your speech will do for them. Everybody is interested in learning things that will help them. Your preparation should be based on this point.
5. Start the speech with a bang! How you start and finish your speech will make a lot of difference - they're the parts of the speech the audience will remember the most.
7. Keep notes of the key points, in the order you want to make them. This will help with the flow of the speech, and ensure that you don't waste time or become distracted by unimportant points.
8. Confident public speaking means telling the audience what you're going to say, saying it, and telling them what you've just said. Start with a brief synopsis, and repeat it again at the end as a summary of the main points of your speech.
9. Keep it simple. Jargon and pretentious or bombastic language will stop the audience from engaging with your speech.
10. Keep to time. Confident public speaking is not about telling the audience everything you know about the topic. Keep your feet on the ground. You can't change the world with a single speech. Better to leave the audience wanting more than to tax their patience by running on for too long.
