Public Speaking Skills Training: Public Speaking Courses For Beginners - Who - Me? Speak?

You never thought it would happen to you. Then, someone 'volunteered' you to speak or present before a group. Your heart may have begun to race as your mind screamed, "Get me outta here!"

If that sounds like you, you're reading the right article. What you'll find here are some tips on how to overcome that fear as a beginning speaker. You'll also find an outlet for practicing your new techniques so that you'll become a more confident speaker.

Tip #1: Breathe. It helps if you can consciously take a few controlled deep breaths before you speak. When we are nervous, our breaths become shallow. Deep breathing allows us to relax.

Tip #2: Practice. This should go without saying. In order to do anything well, whether in sports, music, etc. we must practice. Notice, I didn't say 'memorize'. That's a no-no. Practice using bullet points, even if you've written your speech out. Never memorize or you may lose your place and stumble trying to catch up. You want to internalize your speech instead.

Tip #3: Video Your Speech. I've found this to be an invaluable tool. Beg or borrow a video camera and video while you practice. Some have suggested practicing in front of a mirror but I totally disagree with that. You'll find that you're watching yourself rather than freely giving your speech! Video is much better and gives you a clearer view of what your presentation will look like to your audience.

Tip #4: Join Toastmasters. Toastmasters International has clubs all over the world. Chances are, there's one near you. If so, my suggestion is to visit the club and see what it has to offer. If there are several in your vicinity, visit each one and find the best 'fit' for you. A Toastmasters club will give you the opportunity, not only to practice before an audience, but to receive valuable feedback from an evaluator. See http://www.toastmasters.org.

Will adhering to these 4 Tips make you a professional speaker? No. However, they will help you to gain confidence and start you on your way to becoming the best you can be. If you're serious about becoming a professional speaker or a better presenter, realize that this is simply another step on your journey. Seek out articles, videos and instruction from others who have been there and done that, other professional speakers.

Becoming a better speaker is a process. You've taken the first step. Now, enjoy your journey!
