Public speaking is just like any other skill - the more we exercise, the better we get. Here are 3 simple and easy public speaking tips that you can use to reach - and stay - at the top of your game.
1. Get used to the sound of your own voice
We are all used to hearing ourselves speak in a conversation, but it is a different matter when we stand up in front of an audience. There is more attention placed upon us and we often have to speak more clearly and with a greater volume. When we do so our voice can sound a bit strange to our own ears and this can be enough to throw us off our game.
Getting used to the sound of our own voice is an essential public speaking tip to use when we are starting out as public speakers. Thankfully it is very easy to practice. Simply find a quiet room or even a place outdoors, stand up straight and tall, and start speaking as if an audience is there in front of you.
At first you may feel slightly foolish, but as you go on, your voice will sound more 'normal' and your confidence will start to grow. If you have a public speaking speech ready, use this time to read it out aloud or rehearse without notes. An added bonus is that you will quickly find out what parts of your public speaking speech work, and which don't. You can also practice your body language and which key words or phrases need more emphasis.
2. Practice makes perfect
Seasoned public speakers come across as poised, comfortable and totally in control of their subject for one very good reason - practice. Of all public speaking tips this one has to rank right at the top of the list.
You can go a long way towards making up for lack of experience by simply giving your public speaking speech several practice runs, either with or without an audience. It sounds too simple, but it is extremely effective. 3. Learn how to breathe - properly
When we are stressed or nervous, which can often be the case when we first start out as public speakers, we tend to breathe shallowly from our chest area, and our voice will be weaker as a result.
Another useful public speaking tip is to practice deep, relaxed breathing. This is the best way to calm our nervous system, increase our energy and improve our voice control.
To do this, keep your attention low in the body. Breathe in slowly, pushing out your stomach and lower ribs as your lungs start to fill and only letting your chest expand when your stomach is fully extended. Then breathe out slowly, letting your chest area 'collapse' first, followed by your stomach, until all the air has left your lungs. Repeat this process several times.
Get into the habit of practicing this public speaking tip several times a day and you will find it becomes a habit. Then, when you need to stand up a give a talk, you will find yourself naturally more relaxed and comfortable.
