Public Speaking Skills Training: Preparing For Impromptu Public Speaking Workshop
The influential American author Mark Twain once said that, "It usually takes me about three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech." On the face of it, this humorous statement seems completely paradoxical, but in fact, it is not quite as ridiculous as it might at first seem. This how-to will show you what you need to do to prepare for giving a great impromptu speech, and show you just what Mark Twain meant with his quote.
An impromptu speech is a speech that is given on the spot, with only a short amount of time to prepare. In competition, the speaker will usually be given two minutes of time to develop a five-minute speech, although the exact times will vary depending on where you are competing. Impromptu is not just about competition, however - you might also be called upon to speak without much time to prepare at a conference, a party, a banquet, a club meeting, or at your place of employment. No matter what your lifestyle, impromptu skills are sure to come in handy. But, how to develop them?
The secret of impromptu speaking, as suggested by Twain's quote, is preparation. Practicing and planning long before you ever see a competition room is a sure method for success. It is useful to get a list of sample impromptu topics, which you can either make yourself by flipping through a dictionary or find on the internet, and then to randomly select one of the topics and give a practice speech on it. Practice with the same amount of prep time as you will have in competition, and force yourself to continue speaking for the full amount of time, even if you think that you are out of things to say. This type of realistic practice is the best possible impromptu preparation, and it has two main benefits.
The first is the added confidence that you will gain from knowing that you have done this before and yes, you can do it. The second is the skill you will develop in building on the ideas that your topic produces in your mind and stringing them together into a cohesive whole when you speak.
Another way to prepare for impromptu is to think of sets of examples and stories that you can use in your speeches. Come up with a dozen or so pre-thought-out things to speak about, and you will be amazed at how easy it is to relate them to your main topic and talk about them in your speeches.
If you carry out the practicing technique by itself faithfully for a month, you will be amazed at just how much your impromptu speaking ability improves. It seems that Mark Twain was right: you may not know what your exact topic will be, but by practicing for a wide range of possible topics, prior preparation will drastically upgrade your impromptu public speaking skills.
