Public Speaking Courses: Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking

With public speaking being such a massive fear for so many people, what it is that you can do to overcome your fear of public speaking?

You can attend expensive training courses. These work very well but often the cost and location put them beyond the reach of the people who need them the most.

You could join a public speaking organization such as Toastmasters International, but again the locations are not convenient for everyone.

The best way to overcome this public speaking fear is through public speaking practice. Just going for it and practicing wherever you can, will help you immensely. This isn't always practical because it can be difficult for some of us to get opportunities for public speaking.

If you can't practice in person then a good opportunity is a technique called mental rehearsal. This is a scientifically proven method for improving your skills at anything.

In a scientific test, scientists divided a group of basketball players in to three groups. Each group practiced shooting hoops and their results were measured and recorded.

The first group was a control group who did no practice for several days. In fact, they were told to think about anything except basketball.

The second group was told to practice shooting hoops for a few hours a day.

The third group spent those few hours a day visualizing shooting hoops and imagining it in their mind as if they were there playing. They sat in comfortable chairs whilst doing this.

At the end of the experiment the three groups were called back and told to shoot hoops again.

The results were quite amazing. The first group who did no practice showed no improvement and in fact was a little worse than before.

The second group showed a marked improvement in their ability to shoot hoops.

The surprise was the third group. This group also showed a significant improvement, almost as much as the second group and this was from just pretending they were shooting hoops.

Incredible isn't it?

But this can apply to public speaking as well. If you have a fear of public speaking then all you need to do is visualize yourself speaking in front of an audience. Really imagine it as if you are there looking out of your own eyes. You'll notice a significant improvement in your public speaking skills.
