Public Speaking Skills Training: Overcoming Public Speaking Anxiety With Preparation
At some time in our lives we've all experienced public speaking anxiety. Getting up in front of the crowd is one of the biggest fears of many people. Surveys have shown me some folks would rather go to the dentist or driver a hundred miles an hour on the freeway rather than speak in front of a group.
There are some things that you can do in overcoming public speaking anxiety before you go on stage. The most important thing to help mitigate your anxiety is to know what you're talking about. Study, research and details are all important pieces to make you feel more confident and comfortable when you take the podium. If you don't know what you're talking about and you are not comfortable with the subject matter at hand, the discomfort that you will feel once you're up there can be overwhelming.
The second thing you can do in helping you with overcoming public speaking anxiety is to make sure you know the facts. One of the things that puts us in panic mode just when we have to go in front of people is that are going to be asked a question. If you do not make sure you have researched your fax before you go on the last thing you want to do is start making up things as you go along and get challenged on whether the data is factual. I have seen this time and time again when someone has not done their prep work, goes on stage, gets asked a question, tries to put and falls apart. They have not done any work in helping overcoming public speaking anxiety. They actually brought it on themselves.
The third thing is trying not to rely too heavily on slide shows. In corporate America we often muse about it being "death by slide show." We've all been there when someone decides to bring in 90 or 100 slides to tell their story. What this indicates is they don't know the facts and cannot handle the presentation without the slides; they can't remember what they're trying to say so they have to have constant props to fill the void.
If you really want to be successful in overcoming public speaking anxiety prepare, study and be confident in the elements you are delivering. This will go a long way in overcoming your fears. Raw fear when you're about to give a presentation can take you out faster than anything having to do with the quality of the presentation.
