Public Speaking Skills Training: One Sure Fire Way To Improve Anyone's Public Speaking Ability

I look back on it now and can know I felt two excruciating emotions at once. One was the blind panic - and I use that word judiciously - my mind went completely blank and any internal resources I thought I had just deserted me. And the other, which was even worse, was the personal shame I felt. I felt I had let my audience down, but worse than that I felt I had let myself down. Even now, as I think back to that day, tears, this time tears of compassion for myself are sitting on my eyelids and it's a job to hold them back, (however I have to stop them as the window cleaner, who is a very jolly whistling sort of chap, is just outside cleaning my windows so I'm holding on tight to those tears!). But what is different today is that I am only experiencing one emotion at a time so its much easier to deal with and I can smile to myself at the same time...and that is good.

I vowed that dreadful day that I would not let this happen to me again....I was not a child, I was a well educated woman and I knew my subject - what was the problem with me? Actually who cares what the problem is I thought to myself, my one and only overriding thought was that I will not let this happen to me again.... I will learn to enjoy the number one fear of most people....speaking in public.

So as soon as I got over myself, about two weeks later I joined Toastmasters. Its difficult to explain how this wonderful organisation works its magic. Possibly because as an organisation it fully and entirely understands the psychosis behind the fear of public speaking, and, with rigorous attention to detail, has worked out a way, step by step, how best to alleviate such fears by their careful nurturing of any effort one makes. Its not a voodoo magic potion they offer; you have to do the initial work yourself. You have to put your toe in the water by preparing a first speech, however short, however good or however pathetic, and offer it up for gentle analysis by an experienced evaluator. The usual style of evaluation results in pointing out the many things the evaluator enjoyed about the proffered speech and then just one, or may two gentle recommendations for improvement. The alchemy of Toastmasters, I believe, is in their Commend, Commend, Recommend, Commend approach.

After a couple of months of putting my toe further into the now warm water I am actually looking forward to any role I undertake at Toastmasters with confidence. And I no longer loose sleep over the preparation of speeches which I now really enjoy. And to my very great surprise I am reaping additional benefits of confidence in public speaking. My mind has turned a corner into the vast expanse of possibilities. I am now enjoying writing articles, taking part in rowdy dinner party debates(!) and communication with all and sundry.

The secret to public speaking is to prepare a good enough speech, practice it, and then forget yourself. Let your intention be to make your presentation an enjoyable 10 minutes for your audience who have been kind enough to come along to hear you speak. I know this is a cliche folks...but if I can do it anyone can do it - you just have to make up your mind that to be able to speak in public is a natural right of any human being - you are a child of the universe and you have right to be here....and to be heard!
