Public Speaking Training: Achieve Your Public Speaking Breakthrough

My first try at public speaking was an absolute failure. But I used that failure (and several others), as my stepping stones to success. To put it simply, my failures were my stepping stones to my success.

Here's what I did. I'll take you to the beginning. After my very first failure, I made up my mind never to turn down a speaking engagement; never. I accepted each and every invitation to speak; no matter the topic. It was always a yes.

Here's why I always said yes. No matter what the topic was; I placed myself in the position of learning how to speak publicly on virtually any topic. That's a good thing.

In addition, I accepted every invitation to speak publicly because of the experience. Here's what I learned with my first public speaking failure. In order to get better at public speaking, I had to do it. So, once again, never say no. Always accept an invitation to speak.

When you do that, your breakthrough will come.

Let me tell you about a public speaking speech I gave. This public speaking speech let me know that my breakthrough had finally come. Now, although I say this, let me quickly add; I still had failures after this particular public speaking speech. I wasn't home and dry yet. But it was a watershed moment for me.

I was asked to speak to a group of young people (18-30). My topic was broad, but it was in the arena of making choices. Approximately ten days before I was due to speak, I was locked up.

It was nothing criminal. It had to do with the authorities asking me to do something that went against my conscience. I flat-out refused to do it. They locked me up.

After a few days I called the group to let them know where I was. I told them they should find another speaker. These people were creative thinkers. They asked the authorities to allow me to speak to the young people.

The authorities agreed and the group told me I could speak to their young people about anything. Naturally enough, I spoke about my experience of being locked up. (I think I played right into the organizers hands).

I spoke without notes. That was easy because I spoke from the start right through to the end of my experience. It turned out to be a fantastic public speaking speech. They absolutely loved it. I was a powerful, living message.

That public speaking experience moved me to the next level. Let me hasten to add, it never would have happened if I hadn't adopted the policy of never saying no to an opportunity to speak publicly.
