Public Speaking Skills Training: 5 Minutes to World Class Public Speaking

Now let me be the first to say that it would be difficult to become a world class speaker in 5 minutes... but world class public speaking is a 5 minute secret!

The fear most people have is that they are afraid they don't have enough "material" to talk on a particular public speaking topic. It's often thought that you have to have 40 min, or 4 hours of material to talk about, and who could really talk on a topic for four hours? Well I can tell you who can do that, someone that has prepared small bite size chunks of info. Now remember, your audience is not going to be able to listen for four hours straight, or even 40 minutes straight; their minds wander about every 10 seconds or so. So how do you keep them plugged in? Keep them tied into your current topic, or story that you are telling.

The real secret to speaking effectively is to have information wrapped inside of a story that explains the "facts" you are wanting to tell. Do you remember growing up that relative that would try to get their point across by telling some story about when they were a kid, or about some fable they were told as a child? However crazy they were, you still remember them, right?

Here is the point. Facts Tell, Stories Sell... that's it. So learn how to tell stories when you are in front of a room, they can be personal examples you have or experiences that you have been a apart of. Something that people can relate to, and make sure the "chunks" are in small sizes, five minutes is a good average. Then as you tell one story, you can then share some facts that you want about they topic you are speaking on, then give another story that helps to "set" the info in their mind, much like the stories you have remembered for years from your childhood.

One more thing to remember, is that most of the people in the audience are wondering how you got the courage to get up there and speak, so it's okay to say you're a little nervous and that you hope they won't mind if you make a mistake or two in your public speaking.

You will be amazed at how the feeling of the audience changes when they know they can help you from their seats. So keep it simple, keep it small, tell a story and have fun, five minutes is the key to world class. Link four stories together and you have a 20 minute talk, if someone says you only have 15 minutes, which often happens in public speaking, then you just drop one story. It doesn't effect the power of the rest of your talk.
