Public Speaking Skills Training: Improve your Public Speaking Skills with One Easy Step

One mistake a lot of people make when giving a speech is to work from material of the wrong size.  The standard type size of a typical word processor is 12 point (this article is written in 12 point).  This is meant to be viewed from a relatively short distance, around 12".  However, in a public speaking situation, you will have to read your notes from arm's length or about 36".  It is quite hard, if not impossible, to read a standard page of text from this distance.  Which is roughly 3 times the distance it was meant to be viewed from?  To keep the size comparable to what you would typically read you need to increase it by 3 times.  Fortunately, this is very easy to do.  Almost everyone today uses a word processor that allows them to change the size of their font.  If you are using an old typewriter there is always the option of using the enlarge feature of a copier.

Do you ever see speakers who are bent over, or straining to make out their writing?  This is a standard symptom of not using a large enough font.  The results can be pretty bad-- bad posture, no eye contact, no hand movement and choppy speed.  Sometimes entire point or parts of a public speaking speech can be missed as it is often hard to find your place again.

If you are still handwriting your public speaking speeches, it would be well worth your time to convert them or to have someone convert them on a word processor for you.  This will eliminate any illegible words and also eliminate any problems with too small of a font.

Take the following test as an example.  Move about 3 feet from your screen and try to read this sentence.

Small font is hard to read from a distance typical public speaking situation.

Compared to this example:

Increasing your font size makes your public speaking speech much easier to read, allowing you to focus on the other factors of giving a great speech.
