Public Speaking Skills Training: Drive Out Your Public Speaking Fears
Overcoming public speaking fears is the cherished goal of many people. Unfortunately, most of the people are secretive about their public speaking fears, fearing ridicule from others. But it is not difficult to drive out these public speaking fears and acquire a powerful command over your public speaking speech.
All of us speak. And many of us speak a lot. We are voluble when we are with our friends and family members. We have no hesitation in conversing when we are in a group of 10 or 20 of our friends. There is no sign of inhibition or hesitance. In fact, we often tend to speak incessantly and someone has to stop us!
But how dramatically things change if you are asked to stand facing half a dozen people and address them! You instantly become nervous. Your mouth is parched. Your stentorian voice suddenly loses all its energy and becomes an inaudible moan. You are anxious about when it will get over and are relieved when it does.
All these are caused by fears, fears which are completely irrational and unreal. To be afraid of public speaking is irrational because you have no problem in speaking, when the audience comprises your friends. And it is unreal because, public speaking is no different from any other kind of speaking. If you can speak to one, you can speak to a hundred, a thousand or even a million. If the size of the audience is large, a microphone and speakers are needed to carry your speech to the audience. But this does not have to concern you.
You are apt to say that logic and reasoning notwithstanding, the public speaking fears are real. I agree. So, how does one drive them out? The best way to quickly drive out any feeling is just to ignore it. The feeling will leave you eventually. This is a simple psychological fact. You can test this. If you are worried about something, ignore it by turning your mind away. Watch a comedy show on TV. Or, chat with a friend over phone or online. Just see what happens after a while. Your worry would have weakened. It may not leave you immediately but will remain unnoticed and considerably weakened.
A similar approach will work wonders with your public speaking fears also. Ignore your public speaking fears and launch into the act of speaking. Tell yourself that you will risk doing what you are afraid of rather than living with that irrational fear.
