Public Speaking Seminars: How To Overcome Your Nerves And Give A Perfect Speech
Public speaking can be a nerve wracking experience at the best of times. Even professional performers often get stage fright. So what can you do to help overcome your nerves? Here are some public speaking anxiety tips to help you give a better public speaking speech next time.
Stay calm
OK, easier said than done. But with practice you can reduce the fear that often accompanies speaking in public. Take up some kind of relaxation exercise such as deep breathing, yoga or meditation. Or consider listening to a hypnosis download to help you calm your nerves.
Practice makes perfect
Practice your public speaking speech out loud in the safety of your own home. That way you'll be familiar with the words that will be coming from your mouth when it's your turn to stand up and speak. You won't be able to practice handling all the questions that crop up after your public speaking speech but you can role play with someone else for the most common ones.
Don't rush it
Although your first instinct is probably to get the whole public speaking speech over and done with as quickly as possible, that's not the best experience for your audience. Pace yourself and remember that your audience need time to process what you're saying. Watch a few television programmes and get a feel for the best speed. You don't want to be going so slowly that your audience fall asleep (no matter how tempting that idea is!) and similarly you don't want to be rushing so fast that they miss half your words.
Speak to one person
Imagine that you are speaking to just one person in the audience - as though you were just having a regular conversation with a friend. Don't stare at that person though - keep them imaginary if at all possible, that way you can use them in your practice runs as well. Most people are less intimidated when they're speaking in a one-to-one situation than when they're standing up to speak in front of a large crowd. Use that to your advantage.
Enjoy yourself
Sure, this sounds hard to do. After all, you're about to be center stage, giving a public speaking speech to countless strangers. How could you possibly enjoy yourself when you're doing that? Keeping your sense of fun is actually not as difficult as it first sounds and if you practice at not taking yourself too seriously you'll almost certainly give a better public speaking speech the next time you talk in public.
