Public Speaking Seminar: The Most Important of all Public Speaking Tips
As someone who has taught public speaking classes for almost 25 years, I think I have a fairly good knowledge of what public speaking is all about. As a public speaking coach, I have seen many people pass through my public speaking class that had no idea of what the most important tip of all is, because they didn’t need to. Just by taking a class, I knew they were not likely to become victims of the worst public speaking mistake you can make.
What is the worst public speaking mistake you can make? It’s not speaking at all. That’s right, even worse than anything that can happen at the podium is what happens if you don’t take the podium. Let me give you a real life example.
I was at a wedding in which the best man was to make a toast to the bride and groom to start off the rehearsal dinner. Everyone was having a splendid time, and it came time for the toast. To everyone’s horror, the best man was too afraid to stand up and give his toast. I tried to intervene, since he was sitting next to me, and told him just to stand up and say “here’s to the bride and groom” and sit down, and it would be just fine. No matter what anyone said or did, he refused to stand up. After it became apparent that he was not going to speak, someone else started things off, and his opportunity was missed. Instead of making perhaps a poor speech that would have immediately been forgotten, he shamed himself in a way that would always be remembered. Nothing you can say is as damaging as not speaking at all.
To be asked to give a speech is a privilege. Looking back on your life, you will realize how few times you were asked to speak in public. It should always be seen as a compliment and an opportunity, never as something to avoid or run away from.
If you have no time or desire to learn effective presentation skills, then at least do your part and give a public speaking speech. Failure to do so would constitute the worst mistake of all. More important than effective public speaking is actually speaking in public.
