Public Speaking Training Courses: How to Be the Best Spokesperson For Your Organization

Victor (name changed to protect the guilty) joined the organization 25 years ago in a junior position. In those 25 years he served in many positions, relying on talent and hard work to drive his rise to his present position as Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility.

Recently, listening to his address at a company function I had occasion to ask myself: When is talent and hard work not enough? The answer was simple: When you are a spokesperson for your company.

Being the chief spokesperson in your organization is PR job NUMBER ONE.

As such, a strong spokesperson can help an organization stand out from the crowd. In her book "The fall of advertising and the rise of PR" Laura Ries emphatically states that "The ultimate success of any PR programme depends, to a certain extent, on the effectiveness of the spokesperson."

It follows, then, that there must be some public speaking assets that an effective spokesperson should have. I recommend the following:

Passion. You have to be passionate about your product, service, company or organization and communicate that passion to your audiences, every time you speak!

Brevity. The fewer words the better. I believe that too many people believe that delivering their thoughts in a wordy, convoluted manner convinces the audience of their depth of knowledge and expanse of vocabulary. In reality, the opposite is true. Oh, and loose the jargon!

Conciseness. This is closely related to brevity. Do not take 20 minutes to say something that can be said in a 10-minute public speaking speech and don't spend three minutes answering a question from the media, when 45 seconds will do.

Energy. If you look and sound as though you just got up from sleeping you cannot communicate the energy, excitement and enthusiasm that your audience expects. In addition, if you speak only in a monotone with little or no vocal variety, that's about "it" for us your listeners.

Inspiration. Don't be afraid to be inspirational. Always remember, you are selling a "dream" not a big rock. The best spokespersons inspire and motivate, then end with a call to action.

Expression. Of course you can smile and show some emotion. Many spokespersons adopt a "professional" expression which is often stern and aloof. This is so wrong. A smile goes a long way in securing the emotional commitment to your cause which you are seeking.

Cooperation. I've read those stories too. You know, the ones about the movie stars that demand marshmallow-filled toilet seat covers or a cow on the set so they can have fresh cow's milk. That behavior will not work for you. Cooperate with journalist, conference organizers and even security and maintenance staff. Believe me, they can affect how your message reaches the public.

Flexibility. You may be required to begin your carefully prepared public speaking speech somewhere in the middle. Or what if someone interrupts you to ask a question that you had planned to answer later? Just answer it. Can you send your presentation early if the audience is restless? You had better! Being flexible is one of your greatest assets as a spokesperson.

If you want to be the best spokesperson in the history of your organization then begin by following the advice above.
