Public Speaking Skills Training: 4 Choices for Public Speaking Courses
Public speaking courses are a good option if you are among the 40% of people who have a fear of public speaking. There are 4 types of public speaking courses available to people who want to improve their public speaking performance. You can choose what type will work best for you.
1. A Public Speaking Book by an Expert
There are experts in the field of public and motivational speaking who write "how to" books. These books can guide you through the process of preparing a speech and learning how best to deliver it. The experts are psychologists, teachers, actors, coaches, and some who have just gotten good at talking before groups. If you want to move at your own pace and can do homework on your own, a book about public speaking may be a good choice.
2. Public Speaking Group
High school and college classes, debate societies, and other public speaking groups, like Toastmasters International, are available to provide real-time practice at speaking in front of a group. This is the "learn by doing" school of thought. You can join a group and have regular practice giving speeches and offering critiques to other speakers. With this approach, you are moved beyond just reading about giving speeches. You get practice getting up before a group and it gets easier and easier to do.
3. Public Speaking Mentor/Coach
If you want to have more individual support in improving your public speaking you may want to work with a mentor or coach. The person who works with you will focus on your particular needs. You could practice a speech and get feedback from an expert. As part of your individual program, the mentor/coach may have you read a book on the subject or attend a group. This choice is a more expensive option, but it could be the push you need to get on your way to more effective speeches.
4. Public Speaking Seminar/Workshop
A lot of gurus offer seminars or workshops on the subject. These programs can run from 2 days to a couple of weeks. Dale Carnegie was one of the originals in this area and still offers seminars. Motivational speaker Tony Robbins offers 2 workshops about effective public speaking. Of course, this is another option that can be costly.
You can choose among these 4 types of public speaking courses or do any combination of them. If you do the work, you will be prepared and you will be sharing interesting information with your audience. The fear and anxiety really can go away.
