Public Speaking Training Course to Develop Public Speaking Techniques

Is the fear of public speaking a phobia or a lack of preparation?

In interviewing twenty random people, you will undoubtedly find that the majority of them will admit that they would prefer not to speak in front of crowds of people. Furthermore, it is a known fact that public speaking can cause: one's adrenaline level to catapult, limbs to become numb, overwhelming thirst, perspiration, or even one's voice to tremble. Does that constitute a phobia?

A phobia is simply a fear. What exactly is it then that people are afraid of? Oftentimes fear of public speaking occurs even in front of those we love and are otherwise comfortable around. Could it be then that we are too unfamiliar with our presentation rather than the people beholding us?

Though most people experience butterflies in their inner core before and during public speaking there are some who have extreme anxiety associated with personal public displays of any kind. In such cases it cannot be asserted that a lack of preparation is the case.

Simple Public Speaking Techniques (Three "P"s)

It has been said that when public speaking, picture in your mind that everyone in the audience is in a shameful state and that way you will feel less pressure to perform or less scrutinized. Another tip for public speaking has been to hone in on one person who you know and trust. That focus point is said to allow the speaker to relax and execute the speech effectively. What if you cannot muster the strength to envision onlookers in a shameful way or cannot bear to look up to even focus on a trusted individual?

1. A week before your speaking obligation research your presentation topic and put in written form on index cards, highlighting key points with bullets for easier guidance during the speech.

2. Practice facing a mirror with the index cards at least three times a day two to three days pre-presentation. While practicing in the mirror take liberties to look up from the index cards and pan the audience. Memorizing the speech and practicing frequently in the mirror will boost confidence all the more as you will know your content and be familiar with how to execute!

3. Press despite the pounding heart, the jittery voice, or wobbly knees and trust that your research and practice will pay off and counteract the nervousness. Success will be more readily attained at this point due to step one and step two. A reminder of encouragement is that one must persevere beyond the desire to quit in order to see the pay off.

Personal Experience

Millions of individuals have suffered embarrassing moments at the hands of public speaking. My personal experiences range from not being able to say my name during a class introduction to forgetting my piano composition in a much anticipated recital. It has usually been my experience to be nervous for speaking engagements; however, employing the three "P"s above, preparations, practice, and press, have helped tremendously. In more extreme cases when I am put on the spot and cannot prepare or practice, I simply have to press and know that my voice counts and that I am important despite the raging adrenaline! Fortunately most spectators render mercy when they consider the effort despite the hardship of public speaking.
