Public Speaking Course: Match Your Speech to Audience Expectations

We're all consumers, aren't we? Before you make a purchase on a product or service, you want to know exactly what you're getting. The same applies to groups that invite you to speak or people who sign up for your workshops. It's important for you, as a presenter, to always be clear on what type of public speaking speech you need to deliver for a particular type of event. After all, your goal is to be invited back again or better yet, have a growing attendance at your own live events. Therefore, it's extremely important that the type of speech you or a guest speaker delivers is one that matches your public speaking audience's expectations.

Remember, different public speaking situations call for different types of presentations!

Here are three types below:

Platform. The focus of these public speakers is to promote or sell something. For example, a platform speaker could be a political candidate or a businessperson promoting a certain product or service. For example, those 10-20 minute presentations at networking events where business people introduce themselves are really very short platform speeches.

Keynote. This speaker's focus is on entertaining a group. For example, motivational speakers who are hired to engage and inspire a public speaking audience during a longer event or assembly fall into this category. These folks are usually professional public speakers who are paid by the organization that has hired them to speak.

Educational. This speakers' primary goal is to teach and inform. Usually they're giving a live educational event of their own or are participating in a joint venture where they're teaching a portion of the curriculum. For example, professionals who regularly present to their team or a group within their own organization usually fall into this category.

So when you're sitting down to prepare for your next presentation, what type of speech do you need to create?

Platform, keynote, or educational? You can include elements of all three types in a single presentation, but it's of utmost importance to have one predominant focus that matches your public speaking audience's expectations.

I've been to live events where angry public speaking audiences have paid thousands expecting an education, and instead hear almost full days of one platform speech after another. Don't make this mistake when planning your workshop! Clarify with your host, your guest speaker, or your workshop attendees on the type of presentation they're going to get and deliver exactly that. That's the best way to ensure a win-win for everyone- presenters, event organizers, and listeners alike.
