Public Speaking Training: Can A Meditation Course Cure Your Public Speaking Anxiety?

Speaking in front of a group of people, small or large, can be a nerve-racking endeavor. In the days and weeks leading up to the event the mind will project itself into the future and generate all kinds of scenarios. This can lead to anxiety, stress and general tension over the public speaking speech. A good public speaking speech should not be full of anxiety and worry; it should be a calm and balanced presentation of your ideas. Reducing anxiety and worry is a big deal if they are a problem for you. Meditation is the perfect tool to help keep the mind under control. When we let our minds drag us around we are less in control of ourselves. Meditation is the antidote to this issue.

Meditation is the practice of bringing the mind back to the present moment. Then you can deal with whatever is actually happening. It is the public speaking practice that helps you to gain mastery over the mind so it doesn't keep dragging you around and stressing you out. A simple meditation technique is to sit quietly in a nice area and simply to focus on the breath for a period of time, say 10 or 15 minutes. Practicing this public speaking technique consistently will help many areas of your life improve.

You can always cope with the Now, but you can never cope with the future. -Eckhart Tolle

Meditation is the perfect antidote to public speaking anxiety because it keeps the mind reigned in. Meditation doesn't allow the mind to wander off into the future and start generating an imaginary public speaking future. The future will come by itself. It doesn't need the mind to happen. The mind just gets in the way of graceful movement from one moment to the next.

Now when you are actually in front of your public speaking audience meditation is still essential. Being in a calm and connected mindset while public speaking; allows you to portray your ideas with clarity and authority. Being centered in front of a group of people shows you are confident in both yourself and your abilities. If the mind starts projecting away at this point it is still the same practice. Simply focus back on what you are doing, and do it.

Meditation is a very efficient way to deal with your public speaking anxiety. You can overcome the anxiety in the run up to your public speaking speech, and then use it to stay balanced and calm while you are speaking. This will change the way you view public speaking. You will look forward to your next opportunity to be in the spotlight and speak.

Meditation has many other benefits besides helping speaking anxiety or anxiety in general. It leads to a more connected life. If you haven't sat in meditation before consider starting out with simple guided meditations or go to a good yoga class that has a teacher that incorporates meditation into their class. This is a surefire way to start a great practice.
