Public Speaking Classes: Reasons People Are Afraid of Public Speaking

There is something about public speaking that gives most of us an unwelcoming thought. Even when we have knowledge about a particular subject, most of us are still likely to feel those imaginary butterflies in the stomach. What causes us to be afraid of public speaking?

Here are some of the reasons why people have this fear of public speaking:

1. They are not used to speaking their minds in public. No matter how knowledgeable they are about the topic of their presentation or public speaking speech, if they are not used to expressing their thoughts verbally, then you can only imagine how much fear and anxiety they would be feeling once they are asked to speak publicly.

2. They don't feel confident if they can carry the task of public speaking well. They are afraid because they have envisioned their public speaking speech or presentation to end up a disaster for some reasons.

3. They have probably tried speaking in public once and didn't succeed. So, now they are afraid of giving it another shot.

4. They are afraid of being laughed at or criticized for their performance. Because it is easy to find fault in others, it is often inevitable for some people to have something negative to say about a public speaker's presentation.

So, how do you deal with your fear of public speaking? Is it by not trying? No. Like any other type of fear, the proper way to deal with it is to go through it. Everything can turn out fine with a positive mindset and a thorough preparation. Never leave any room for doubt in your head that you cannot do it. Give yourself that positive affirmation that you can do it. Rehearse your public speaking speech over and over again so that you would become used to it just like getting caught in your favorite song. Moreover, you can also attend to one of those public speaking seminars or communication workshops and get professionally coached if you think you still need to improve your communication skills.
