Public Speaking Skills Training: The Creative Professional Speaker
"Speakers Speak," was the firm statement of a dear friend of mine. Joe holds many titles as an icon in the speaking industry. We were having a marketing discussion about the differences between the ways a professional speaker marketed themselves thirty or forty years ago and the way they market themselves now. When Joe started marketing himself, a professional speaker would telephone program chairmen to present themselves. As a follow up, a speaker might fax a short biography to potential organizations.
Telephoning and faxing were the most effective methods available at that time; however, communication has changed. Faxing is rarely used except to transmit documents which require an actual signature rather than an electronic signature. Telephoning conveys a very personal touch. Personal contact warms the relationship. Unfortunately, in our modern hurry scurry world we frequently dash off a quick email rather than picking up the telephone. Hearing the sound of someones' voice and feeling the vibration in their speech creates a much more personal touch than a brief email. Frequently in the interest of time we send a quick instant message, a text message or a super brief email from our Blackberry or i-phone. Yes, this transmits the message but something is lost in the warmth of a personal voice.
If my duty required me to select a professional speaker, I would want to hear their voice in order to feel how they would present themselves to my group.
The problem with using telephone calls as the primary means of contacting program chairmen is the "one-time shot." If the chairperson did not happen to be available, or was not seeking a professional speaker at that particular time, the message could be lost. More effective and modern approaches exist.
1. Design an attractive website with all of the credentials and testimonials included.
2. Market the professional speaker 's availability on the internet and send them to the carefully crafted website. At that point, the program chair enters their contact information.
3. Now you know the chairperson likes your topic and background. This allows the potential for a series of emails to stay in contact with the organization.
4. An additional "thank you" page generally follows the initial "lead capture" page. Since "speakers speak," use the opportunity to include a video on either or both of those web pages. Another option exists to place an attractive picture of th professional speaker on the site and include an audio under the picture. I suggest you have both the video and the audio play automatically when someone clicks on the web page.
5. Telephone the program chair to introduce yourself. Keep the conversation brief. Introductions are not keynote speeches. Telephone calls add warmth and appreciation for the interest; they open the door for further discussion and confirming a potential speaking engagement in the future.
