Public Speaking Skills Training: Motivate Others to Excellence with Public Speaking Course Success Stories!

Motivating speakers to keep practicing, developing and delivering speeches at regular intervals is a key to public speaking training program success. A great strategy to maintain a speaker's motivation is to include a Success Stories segment as a standing item in your club's meeting agenda - or in a public speaking course or education program, include one in a review of prior program sessions.

People join public speaking training programs or enroll in public speaking courses to either overcome their fear of public speaking or learn strategies on how to better connect with and influence an audience. For some the motivation is a feeling of dread that it was only a matter of time before they embarrassed themselves in front of their colleagues, managers or clients. Others are reluctant presenters, terrified of not being good enough for an upcoming important event such as a wedding or a university or community presentation. The remainder are sick of being paralyzed by the fear of speaking in public and are now prepared to tackle this personal demon head-on by enrolling in a public speaking course.

Most aspiring public speakers start a public speaking course with high expectations. They celebrate the achievement of having taken decisive action to join a public speaking training program. However, developing and delivering speeches at regular intervals is hard work, and all too soon many lose that initial enthusiasm and lack sufficient motivation to persevere. Life has a habit of getting in the way of good intentions. Lack of practice inhibits progress, and potentially reinforces feelings of inadequacy in the individual with respect to their ability to present themselves confidently and eloquently in public.

The inclusion of a Success Stories segment in any public speaking training program will motivate all speakers to persevere in developing their presentation skills.

The Success Stories segment commences with the Chairperson, Trainer or Facilitator inviting a public speaking course participant or any member of the audience to share a recent personal experience that deals with speaking in public. To maximize impact, each presentation should be limited to between two to three minutes. An event from the recent past is ideal. If the class meets on a fortnightly basis, then an occasion since the last session, or no more than a month old, is preferred. Retelling a recent event will aid the speaker's ability to recall more vivid detail, to connect and convey authentically the emotions they felt before, during and after their presentation. Successful speakers often radiate a glow of achievement; each word, phrase and description has a vibrancy that makes a positive impact on the audience and enhances the experience for everyone.

Encourage Success Story speakers to specify the details of their presentation for the benefit of others in the public speaking training program as follows:

-- What was the situation? (provide a context) e.g. the birthday party of a friend
-- Where did it occur? e.g. hired hall
-- How did they come to be there? (if relevant) e.g. best friend
-- Who was there? e.g. about 50 invited guests or a seminar hall of 2000 delegates
-- Why it was challenging? in the past they could never imagine themselves doing this
-- Ask them to describe what happened
-- Let them to explain why being a member of a public speaking training program or participating in this public speaking course made a difference in this instance, and
-- Encourage them to express their emotions and sense of achievement at their success.

The Chairman should make a point of congratulating each Success Story speaker, and re-emphasize how the public speaking training program or public speaking course can do the same for any member of the audience.

Success Story presentations serve two purposes. Firstly, for speakers, the telling their personal story in a Success Segment reinforces their overall positive experience of public speaking. They have the opportunity to celebrate their achievement with an audience that appreciates and understands the courage needed to overcome the unique challenges of being a presenter. Secondly, the audience will see Success Segment speakers convey their story with excitement, a sense of achievement and a glow of pride. A successful speaker's positive energy and enthusiasm is contagious -- guaranteed to inspire others of the benefits in maintaining momentum in developing and delivering speeches on a regular basis.

Marianne Williamson said, "And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

By giving opportunity, permission and encouragement to any presenter, irrespective of whether they are a novice, experienced or professional, to share their stories of public speaking success, so too do you give every person in the public speaking training program audience the gift to be inspired and motivated to do the same.
